Many adults experience it from time to time inexplicable back pain. With aging comes a general loss of muscle and our core muscles. Especially, affected because we use them so often and exercise them so little. Mid back pain on the right side is very common.

Unfortunately, back pain is not always just muscular soreness. Because many of our vital organs are clustered in the abdominal region, lower back pain can be a sign of something much more serious. By identifying from which side of your back the pain comes, you can get a good start on figuring out what is causing it.

The two abdominal regions on the right-hand side of the back are broken into the “upper right quadrant” and “lower right quadrant”. Both contain important organs. Try to decide which quadrant the pain might be coming from. (It is possible that pain stems from both.)

Appendicitis

One of the most severe possibilities for right side back pain is appendicitis. Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed or swollen. This is a medical emergency and requires an immediate trip to the hospital. However, a swollen or burst appendix usually causes pain and tenderness throughout the entire right abdomen, not just the back.

Endometriosis

Another severe albeit unlikely is possibility of endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when cells from the uterus begin growing outside the uterus. This is also a serious medical condition and attention (or an ER trip) are called for. Like appendicitis, endometriosis usually carries symptoms other than mid back pain on the right side. Pelvic pain, leg pain and various other symptoms usually present as well.

Muscle Strain

The most common cause of mid back pain on the right side is simply muscle strain. We use our back muscles almost constantly during sitting and standing, while walking and particularly while lifting. It is not hard to pull or strain these overworked muscles. There are several treatments that can reduce mild to moderate back pain at home. While intense back pain does warrant a trip to the doctor.

Mid Back Pain Right Side – Treatments

  • First of all, try taking an over-the-counter painkiller. Some brands even manufacture medicines particularly for back pain.
  • Another source of relief is a heat pad or heat sock. Heat pads plug into the wall and usually have adjustable heat levels. A heat sock is a more DIY solution. You also can fill a sock with dry rice then microwave for 2-3 minutes. The sock will be very hot. Wrapped in a towel and applied to the middle back of your body. This treatment can be very soothing for pain relief.
